Jonas is 2 weeks!

Here's a picture of Jonas last week, along with a cow blankie from Aunt Betty Blandford and an Alaskan moose from Ruth's cousin Brian Blandford in Nome. Gotta love that double chin!

The kids always want to hold him and the younger ones at least want to be forever stuffing a pacifier in his mouth. He must want it, surely! I fear he may not walk until he is too heavy for big brothers and sisters to hold him! Peter didn't want to hold him until the umbilical cord fell off! Too gross, I guess.

About the time Jonas arrived on the scene, we had another fun event. We got six Barred Rock pullets. I'm posting some pix of them as well. And my dad was kind enough to fence in a pen in the barn where we are keeping them. When they're grown they'll be gray and white spotted and they'll lay brown eggs, starting around September.

We also had several new kittens but they haven't fared so well. The mother's aren't the most attentive, so while there were about 4 or 5 total (the number is disputed), we seem to be down to just one lone kitten. Kind of sad considering how much love was lavished on them, but I have no plans to keep any kittens.

Lastly, we got our garden in. I'm excited to have such a big garden. You see three sections and one whole section is strawberries. It doesn't look like much right now, but hopefully it will be overflowing with good things later this summer! (Yes, that's one of our cats that thinks it's a litter box. Chris put up a nice fence all the way around to put a stop to that.)

New mann cub! Jonas Blandford Mann

Jonas Blandford Mann became the newest Mann cub today, weighing in at 8 lbs 12 oz, Both mom and baby are resting well.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers,

Chris, Ruth and Jonas

Update 3:10 pm

Update 2:37 pm -- DONE!!

Baby Mann was born at 2:37 p.m., weighing at 8 lbs 12 oz. Both Ruth and baby are healthy and resting. Baby’s name still being deliberated.

Update 2:03

Still in labor. We thought things would go quicker, but baby isn’t in a hurry. All is well and normal.

Update 1:13

Ruth’s in labor and pushing

Update 1:05 pm

We’re almost at 10 cm, and the staff is prepping for delivery. This won’t take much longer!

Update 12:56 pm

Ruth is at 9 cm, station 0. (Station means what position the baby is at. Station -2 is deep, station -1, 0, +1, +2 means increasingly further out. Station 4 is the baby’s head is visible and ready for birth.)

Ruth is pretty well numbed up, and resting well, even dipped into a brief nap.

Update 12:05 pm

First and foremost, I’m hungry and need some lunch.

Second, Ruth is ok, nothing to report. Still at 6 cm, and the epidural has enabled her to rest a bit. We’re both a bit sleepy due to a late night and early morning. I’ll probably be able to cat nap, but I’m not so sure about Ruth. We’ll see.

Light headed

One of the side of effects of an epidural is nausea, and Ruth is feeling a touch of that now. She’s ok, but has a damp towel on her forehead for some comfort.

Nice Digs!

It's not just the medical gizmos, wifi access, or flat panel tv. This place actually feels homey -- as, you know, delivery rooms go. Great decor, cabinets, plenty of space for me to move without bumping Ruth or the medical stuff.

Opting for old fashion

We have a nice flat panel tv to watch, but my wife opts for Aesop. What a woman!

Pictures - Ruth at intake

Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork, “you’re going to charge me this much to save me that much pain….where do I sign??”

Pictures - 7:00 a.m. - Rise, Pack and Shine

Ruth packs up her things for an overnight stay at Dupont Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Update: We're in the Situation Room

The day started quiet…too quiet. Then we remembered that we had handed off the kids to our good friends Ty and Melanie Odle last night so that we could arrive at Dupont Hospital bright eyed and bushy tailed at 7:30 a.m. Ruth and I packed things up in the car – including my laptop, digital camera, batteries, powercords, etc., etc., for today’s brave new delivery.

And “new” is the operative word here; we’re veterans with the baby birthing thing, and we’ve noticed that hospital rooms keep getting posher and posher. Ruth has her own room, with many modern conveniences, including the normal array of medical gizmos but also including a full couch for me to relax and/or fold out for a truly comfortable overnight. ~25” flat screen tv, lots of power outlets for geeks like me.

Epidural is going in, more updates later.

More pictures of the new kitten

Curiosity has a kitten!

Curiosity gave birth to one kitten this week, and while we're all excited about the kitten, we are pretty surprised only one came out. Or, at least, one came out that we know about. (Curiosity and her companion, Pandora, live in the barn). Curiosity seems to have trouble nursing the kitten, however, so we bought some special milk and a special bottle from the pet store to tide the little guy (we think?) over until Curi's body starts to produce milk.
